Everything you need to know (it's not much)
We teach everything at the start. Balfolk dances are simple, social, and built to be learned on the spot. You'll be dancing within minutes.
Everyone rotates partners. Come alone, come with friends — you'll dance with everyone and leave with new ones.
Flat shoes with smooth soles work best. Sneakers are fine. High heels and flip-flops — not so much.
Both venues are proper Dublin pubs. Grab a drink, watch a few dances, jump in when you're ready. No pressure, ever.
Dancing to folk music has been gaining popularity since the 1970's. The traditional dances come primarily from the French tradition, with additions from all parts of Europe.
Although there are similarities, the dances of Balfolk are not the same as the dances danced by traditional groups. Balfolk dances are generally based on simple traditional choreographies and have a simple base, which makes learning the dances easy for everyone. Refined movements are not the main concern — improvisation is more common.
It's community-driven, inclusive, and joyful. Live music, simple steps, real human connection.
